I photographed these guillemots on Hornøya in March 2025. The birds fill the frame, with the same shapes repeating at different distances. At first glance it looks like an Escher drawing, but this pattern comes from the birds themselves.

View official results The story behind the photographA single, heart-shaped leaf drifts along a dark autumn stream in Den Bosch, The Netherlands. Photographed from above a small stream, subtle ripples formed soft, horizontal reflections that resemble lines of text. By carefully framing the reflections and waiting for the right moment, I was able to align the leaf with the subtle wave patterns. As the leaf moved through the frame, it became a focal point within this quiet, graphic scene.

By using a slow shutter speed, I wanted to transform the rotating blades of these wind turbines into what look like the giant saw blades of monsters. Captured in Deil, The Netherlands, during a November evening in 2025, this image visualizes the darker side of our transition to renewable energy. A massive murmuration of European Starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) drifts nervously over the treeline, appearing visually compressed by the looming structures. To me, the solid, sharp-edged circles created by the long exposure symbolize the rigid, mechanical barriers we are erecting in the natural world. While we need green energy, this scene highlights the often-overlooked conflict: these "eco-friendly" giants can be dangerous obstacles for the birds that share the airspace, turning a safe roosting site into a zone of potential peril.

View official results The story behind the photographAntlers of a deer stand out against a plain white background, giving the scene a simple but striking look. Because the body is hidden, the focus is fully on the shape of the antlers. This minimal view makes the animal almost abstract, yet still powerful. With no distractions around it, the image shows how much impact just a small detail of nature can have.
British Wildlife Photography Awards · Highly Commended · Animal Portraits · 2026This photo was taken in a park near London. The oak tree that stood there was very popular with the many gray squirrels. Occasionally they walked on this tree, which allowed me to make this beautiful silhouette against the sky. This image captures the raw beauty of Iceland's coast from high above. A river, colored by the earth it carries, cuts a path through the wide beach. The sand here is pitch black, created by volcanoes long ago. Against this dark ground, the water looks just like flowing liquid gold. You can see it twisting and turning until it finally reaches the sea. There, the golden water meets the rough, white waves of the ocean. The photo does not rely on many different colors to tell a story. Instead, it uses just three powerful tones: gold, black, and white. This simple mix makes the contrast very intense and draws your eye directly to the shapes and the way the water moves across the land.

Asferico · Winner Bird Category · 2025A lone bird rests on a vast field of solar panels along the highway in the Netherlands,a striking symbol of the tension between green energy and nature. As we transition to sustainable power, the infrastructure often claims scarce space that could have been left for wildlife. This spontaneous moment captures that paradox: progress requires space, but at what cost to nature? No bait was used, just a fleeting encounter between a bird and a man-made future.

Glanzlichter · Honorable Mention · 2025Against a bright, high-key sky, a male Cockchafer (Melolontha melolontha) displays its magnificent, fan-like antennae. Captured in May 2024 in the Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinen, The Netherlands, this image is a play on perspective. I found the beetle perched naturally on a branch. To create this "aerial" viewpoint without disturbing the insect, I held grass blades upside-down above it and then rotated the final image 180 degrees. This creative composition highlights the insect’s impressive sensory organs, where the seven "leaves" of the antennae are fanned out to detect female pheromones. The result is a clean, minimalist aesthetic that isolates the subject in the wild.

Lowland Photo Contest · Highly Commended · 2025Along the bottom edge of the frame, a bird walks carefully over concrete, searching for small scraps or insects. Above it, the structure casts a bold grid of shadows onto the textured wall, and the bird’s silhouette becomes part of that pattern. The shadow is crisp and oversized, creating a second version of the bird that seems to exist independently from the real one. The mix of natural behavior and the strict geometry of the shadows gives the image a strong graphic feel, while the subtle textures of the wall and the calm posture of the bird keep the moment grounded in reality.

Like black ink flowing across a white canvas, a massive flock of European Starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) sweeps towards a roosting tree in Herwijnen, The Netherlands. Captured in January 2024, I used an in-camera multiple exposure technique to create this effect. By layering multiple moments of the flight into one image, the photo emphasizes the fluid, synchronized pattern of the birds as they move together. The dark shape of the tree and the solitary lamppost act as anchors, standing still against the rushing, chaotic movement of the swarm as they gather for the night.

MontPhoto · 1st Award · Birds · 2025Around the renowned bird cliffs of Hornøya island in northern Norway, the sky transforms into a chaotic living tapestry. A massive flock of Common Murres (Uria aalge) wheels and swirls in synchronized flight, returning from a winter on the open Barents Sea to reclaim their nesting ledges for the upcoming breeding season. This intense, dizzying swarm behavior often precedes the difficult task of landing on the crowded cliff faces in March 2025. In stark contrast to this restless energy, a solitary European Shag (Gulosus aristotelis), identifiable by its crest, stands motionless on a snow-dusted rock outcrop on the right. The monochrome composition emphasizes the differing rhythms of high Arctic coastal life: the frenetic collective movement of the incoming auk colony alongside the stoic patience of a resident observer.

In Iceland, I was photographing the structures and textures of old fishing nets when I suddenly noticed a crow’s foot emerging from the tangle. What began as an abstract study of lines and patterns shifted into something unsettling and symbolic. The sharp black claw contrasts against the woven nets, creating a dialogue between human activity and the traces of wildlife. This unexpected detail turns the image into more than just texture,it becomes a quiet reminder of their uneasy intersection.

On our trip to Grand Teton, we were waiting at a spot known for sightings of bighorn sheep when we suddenly heard the distant howls of coyotes. We searched for a while, scanning the landscape, and then, off to our left, we spotted a coyote standing right on the ridge of the mountain. I quickly aimed my camera, and, luckily, the coyote howled once more, giving me the perfect moment to capture this shot. It was truly a stroke of luck,a moment of pure joy! This photograph, titled “Cry of the Coyote,” captures that exact scene: a lone coyote standing proudly on a snow-covered ridge, silhouetted against the winter sky. Its head is tilted back in a haunting howl, with the sound echoing through the cold, still air. The desolate, snowy landscape emphasizes the wild spirit of the coyote, as it becomes one with the vast, untouched surroundings. The muted tones of the snow and rocks create a minimalist backdrop that draws all attention to the solitary figure of the coyote, highlighting its resilience and strength. The image tells a story of solitude and survival, embodying the raw, untamed essence of the wilderness. This moment of connection between the animal and its environment invites viewers to feel the chill in the air and the deep sense of isolation, making it a truly unforgettable memory from our journey.

Captured from below the water's surface, a pair of Common Toads (Bufo bufo) swim through a pond in Drenthe, The Netherlands. Taken in March 2024 during the spring mating season, this image reveals a hidden moment in the amphibian life cycle. Unlike frogs, which lay eggs in clumps, toads produce these distinctive long strings of black eggs, seen trailing clearly behind the female.
Bird Eating Flowers is a striking photo captured in November 2023 in Herwijnen, The Netherlands, showcasing windmills that resemble big, blooming flowers. This unique effect is achieved through a technique called multiple exposure, which stitches several images together. This method allows the windmills' spinning motion to merge seamlessly with their stationary parts, creating a mesmerizing floral pattern against the backdrop of the sky. In the frame, sparrows add dynamism to the composition, looking as though they're weaving through a field of giant flowers. Notably, no bait was used to attract the birds; their presence in the photo is completely natural. This image was meticulously composed to underscore the perils that these majestic yet potentially dangerous spinning blades pose to birds as they navigate through them. I aimed to highlight the motion in the scene to draw attention to the risk windmills pose to birds, emphasizing the danger of the spinning blades. The blend of technology and nature, coupled with the multiple exposure technique, renders this image not just visually stunning but also thought-provoking, urging viewers to reflect on the interaction between human-made structures and wildlife.
Groene Camera · Winner Black & White · 2024In the nature reserve De Pettelaar in Den Bosch, a place I often visit, I captured this image from a bridge in autumn. The flow of the water created intriguing reflections of the bridge’s cracks, which resembled drawn lines. The drifting autumn leaf contrasts with the linear patterns, resulting in a fascinating and almost abstract image. The combination of simplicity and complexity evokes a sense of calm and wonder.

This photo was taken in September 2024 during the golden hour with a drone equipped with a 166mm lens. What fascinated me was the contrasting beauty of nature and industry; the gulls found a resting place in a human-dominated environment. From this unique perspective, the fusion of man and nature becomes visible.
